Please note that Industry Accreditation is being withdrawn. CPCS will phase out blue Competent Operator cards gained through Industry Accreditation from 1 January 2020, and any cards issued through transitional routes will be completely removed by 31 December 2024.

How to get a Blue CPCS Competent Operator Card?
To get the Blue CPCS Competent Operator Card you must:
- Already have a Red CPCS Trained Operator Card.
- Provide proof of achievement of the SVQ or NVQ for the category being applied for.
- Pass the relevant CITB health, safety and environment test.
- Achieve the CPCS theory test (within two years of the CITB health, safety and environment test)
- Achieve the CPCS practical test
- Both CPCS theory and practical tests are delivered by an accredited CPCS test centre.

CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card confirms you have demonstrated a level of health, safety and environment awareness through the relevant health, safety and environment test, underpinning knowledge through a CPCS theory test, operating ability through a CPCS practical test and operating competence on the type of plant evidenced by a VQ.
CPCS Blue Competent Operator card holders have demonstrated their ability to work unsupervised, and may, in fact be called upon to supervise Red Trained Operator card holders on the worksite.
How to Renew Your CPCS Blue Card:
To renew your card 3 months before it expires, you need to:
- Hold a valid CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card for the category you are renewing.
- Pass the relevant health, safety, and environment test within the last two years.
- Pass the CPCS CPD Renewal relevant to the categories you are renewing.
- Show ongoing practical operating experience through one of these routes:
- New Digital Logbook / Old Paper Logbook
- On-Site Assessment with a registered test centre
- CPCS Practical test with a registered test centre
- VQ (if taken in the past 2 years)
Complete the F1/3 application to renew your card. You can do this online or by mailing the application form. If a fee is required, you will be sent an online link. Applications can be made 3 months before the expiry date.

How long is a CPCS Blue Card valid for?
CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card are valid for 5 years from the date of issue. At this point, you will need to renew your card by contacting NOCN. The process of CPCS blue card renewal will vary depending on how long your card has been expired for.
For those whose card has been expired for less than 5 years, you will be able to renew your card if you have passed the CITB HS&E test within the past 2 years, completed CPCS renewal tests for all the categories on the card, and demonstrated on-going practical operating experience. Experience can be evidenced through an on-site assessment, a CPCS practical test, or a logbook.
If your CPCB Blue Competent Operator Card has been expired for over 5 years, you will to have passed the CITB HS&E test (within the past 2 years), pass CPCS theory and practical tests, and hold the relevant NVQ.
How do I add a category to my CPCS Blue Card?
As you progress in your career as a plant operative, it is likely that you will want to expand your skill-set and make the most of training and development opportunities. If you do train in a new category, then you will need to be assessed in this category so that your Blue CPCS Card can be updated. The process for this is the same as the process for applying for a Blue CPCS Card directly. You will need to provide evidence that you have achieved an SVQ or NVQ related to the new category, pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test (within the last 2 years) and pass the relevant CPCS Theory and Practical tests. Once you have done this, the new category will be listed on your Blue CPCS Card.
